When an employer hires an employee, he/she expects them to work on the job they’ve been tasked. However, more often than not, this doesn’t happen as employees waste an unacceptable amount of their time on non-work related activities, especially texting. This of course wastes a lot of time, which is why employers are beginning to see employee texting at workplace as a huge issue that needs to be tackled. The concerns of employers are not without merit, as failing to curb excessive texting at workplace can introduce a variety of additional problems.
If the employees start to waste too much of their time, then employers may feel that they are left with no choice but to enter the grey area, i.e. digital monitoring. This is when they resort to cell phone monitoring apps. These apps enable them to keep tabs on employees’ mobile communications such as their SMS exchange, including the content of those messages, the time and date at which they were exchanged, and the phone number of sender/recipient. This of course doesn’t sit well with the employees as they begin to feel that their privacy is being violated. As a result, a rift develops between the management and the workforce, gradually widening to a point where it begins to take a toll on the smooth running of day to day operations.
One major reason employers get so angry about employee texting at workplace is because they don’t focus on the task assigned and consequently hand in unfinished work. This of course affects the overall performance of the company. Employers have worked day in and day out to build a reputation for their company, so when the company faces loss just because the employees were too busy wasting their time, they can’t help losing their temper and doing something drastic, like downsizing.
Employees Can Lose Jobs
The company belongs to the employers and they want the people in it to perform at their best, so they will have the last say in this. If employees keep balance between texting at workplace and the work assigned, then they’ll be in no real trouble. However, if they are ignoring their tasks and indulging in leisure activities, then the likelihood is that employer will be compelled to take strict action against them and even fire them. So it’s not just an issue for the employers, it’s also a concern for the employees.
Texting at Workplace Policies
This issue has been so widespread that the researchers have started to put a lot of thought into it and are coming up with different policies that will control texting in workplace. If employers don’t want to take extreme precautions like monitoring cell phones of their employees, then these policies are the second best solution. This works for both parties to some extent. However, there will always be a few people that would be left unhappy. Some of the employers want employees to work on the task assigned the whole day and don’t do anything else, and then there are employees who waste a large chunk of their time on texting at workplace, and don’t like being constrained. However, both these parties are extremes and fortunately represent only a minority. So the policies will be a problem for the people on the extreme side, but other than that, they’ll mostly work just fine.
