Vivo Looks Set to Launch First Smartphone With In-Screen Fingerprint Sensor at MWC Shanghai

Last week, a short leaked video clip showed a Vivo smartphone with an on-screen fingerprint sensor and while the authenticity of that video was still under scrutiny, the company has now launched an official teaser that hints at the feature. As per the launch teaser, the company might be launching its upcoming smartphone with in-screen fingerprint sensor at Mobile World Congress 2017 in Shanghai, scheduled to start on June 28.

The launch teaser, shared by Vivo India on Wednesday, shows that fingerprint sensor logo going in and out of a plane, seemingly indicating that the sensor will be embedded in the display. Moreover, the company has mentioned a tagline that says “Unlock the Future” on the teaser image. While it is possible that the company could be indicating some other security feature related to the fingerprint sensor, our best guess for now would be a display-integrated fingerprint sensor.

Vivo Looks Set to Launch First Smartphone With In-Screen Fingerprint Sensor at MWC ShanghaiIn its tweet, Vivo India said, “We are thrilled to be launching a new solution in just a few days at Shanghai #MWC2017. Let’s unlock the future together!” If Vivo indeed becomes the first company to launch a smartphone with in-screen fingerprint scanner, it will come across as quite an achievement for the company as tech behemoths Apple and Samsung are said to be struggling with the feature’s implementation on their upcoming flagship smartphones.

While Samsung is said to have ditched plans for the feature altogether on Galaxy Note 8, Apple’s iPhone 8 smartphones have been tipped to face delayed shipments as the company is still contemplating the manner in which the sensor should be introduced to its upcoming iPhone 8.

OnePlus 5 Camera Specifications Revealed, Press Render Leaks Ahead of Today’s Launch

After many leaks and teasers, the OnePlus 5 is set to go official on Tuesday. Hours before the launch, the leaks continue to flow, and we now have a full-fledged press render leak showing us the back and front of the OnePlus 5, revealing key design details. Furthermore, a video released by The Verge talks about the thought process gone in making the smartphone, and even confirms its camera specifications.

OnePlus 5 camera

The OnePlus 5 camera is at the centre of The Verge’s video on the smartphone, which includes executives talking about thought process gone into making the handset. The video starts with glimpses of the OnePlus factory in Shenzhen and how things work there. While competitors like Apple and Samsung are moving towards a bezel-less display, OnePlus says that it still lacks the resources to do that. Hence, it focuses on building a camera that competes with the best in the market.

While procuring the hardware for a dual camera setup was difficult, OnePlus managed to do so with the help of its sister company Oppo. The video confirms that the OnePlus 5 sports two rear sensors at the back – one main 16-megapixel Sony sensor with f/1.7 aperture and another 20-megapixel Sony telephoto lens with f/2.6 aperture. In the video, OnePlus claims that this is “the highest resolution dual-camera system on a smartphone today.” The company also notes that there is a portrait mode, and that 80 percent of the camera’s success is because of the work put into its software, and that this will be the differentiating factor for the smartphone.

Now coming to the press render leak, noted tipster Evan Blass has shared this latest image of the OnePlus 5. It is seen sporting a dual camera setup at the back with the OnePlus logo sitting in the centre. The antenna bands placement and the overall form appears to be heavily inspired by the iPhone 7 Plus design aesthetic. In the front, there is a Home Button seen at the bottom of the display, and this is where the fingerprint scanner will presumably be placed. There’s no bezel on the left and right edge of the smartphone, but the top chin is visible with the front camera and earpiece. The power key sits on the right edge of the smartphone while the volume and switch keys sit on the left edge.

OnePlus 5 Impresses in Its First Durability Test

OnePlus 5, the much-anticipated smartphone, was finally unveiled on Tuesday, and as expected, it packs some top notch specifications. The new flagship from OnePlus has received its first durable test that reveals the phone can take care of itself in tough conditions.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything has put the OnePlus 5 through a series of scratch, burn, and bend tests, and you won’t be disappointed with the phone’s performance.

OnePlus 5 Impresses in Its First Durability TestAs per the durability test video by JerryRigEverything, the OnePlus 5 offered resistance against scratches on the screen as well as on the camera lens at the back. The video showed the OnePlus 5 being scratched with a coin and key which initially left a mark but were easy to get rid of. In the video, the OnePlus 5 was however seen having severe scratches at the back with sharp objects like knife and razor. Jerry points that the OnePlus 5 is “durable but not invincible” referring to sharp objects.

The OnePlus 5 was also subjected to fire where the display started showing white pixels after almost 40 seconds, and Jerry adds that users will need to make sure that the phone does not come in contact with fire. In the bend test, the OnePlus 5 back popped up when pressed with hands though it didn’t bend beyond a point. The phone convincingly passed the bend test with flying colours.

JerryRigEverything says that his series of torture tests shows how phones like the OnePlus 5 are made for handling durability and how well the device will last through the coming years. We can expect the OnePlus 5 passing through several kinds of tests in the coming weeks.

New smartphone app can alert drowsy drivers

Scientists have developed a new smartphone app that can alert a car driver if they are sleepy, an advance that may help avoid fatal accidents caused by fatigue driving. The new approach adopts a smartphone’s real-time video to track and analyse the facial features of a driver, in particular, the changes in his eyelids and head position, which are prominent fatigue symptoms.

With the app installed in a smartphone, a driver just has to put it near the steering wheel with the front camera facing him in his normal driving position. When the camera captures features like drooping eyelids, drowsiness or even nodding off, an alarm is automatically set off. To ensure that the driver is awakened, the driver has to turn off the alarm either by voice or by hand.

smartphone app, drowsy app, wake up app, car app, indian express, science, mobile news, mobile technologyThe method, developed by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in China, requires only a smartphone without any additional devices or sensors. It is cost-effective, simple to operate, portable, detects accurately, highly reliable, and supports online system updates.

As the system can activate the rear camera of the smartphone, it can also be utilised as a normal driving recording system, as used by many drivers now. The results of fatigue driving should not be underestimated, said Professor Cheung Yiu-ming from HKBU.

The new system is suitable for all drivers, but especially for professional drivers and machinery workers who have long working hours. Yiu-ming added that the system may also interest corporations with a vehicle fleet, or insurance companies.

Fatigue-driving detection systems are currently installed only in a few luxury models offered by car manufacturers. Those systems require additional devices and sensors installed in a vehicle, making them non-portable, expensive and difficult to fit system updates, thus not beneficial to general drivers.
